The Curious Case of the “Pateck” Counterfeiter

Imagine being selected to judge a contest of fine watches and finding a counterfeit of your own company's product! That's exactly what happened to Adrien Philippe at the Universal Exposition in Antwerp in 1885, and the resulting furor (including government sanctions and a high-profile court case) laid the foundation for anti-counterfeiting measures to this day. Incredibly, the perpetrator of this fake (labeled "Pateck & Cie, Genève") was a respected watch trader, Armand Schwob, who insisted that it was Patek Philippe that was in the wrong. Let's take a look at the "Affaire Pateck-Schwob"!

Zodiac Sea Wolf and the Dive Watch Craze

Jose Pereztroika recently debunked the fictitious history of the Zodiac Sea Wolf, inspiring me to look for additional context and information about this historic watch brand. Although it is difficult to say definitively that Zodiac did not produce a dive watch in 1953, there is a great deal of circumstantial evidence to suggest that they, like many other watchmakers, followed the trend set primarily by Rolex, jumping into the dive category at the Basel Fair in 1958. But the original Zodiac Sea Wolf had some interesting features, making a worthy historic model!

How Charles Vermot Saved the Zénith El Primero – In His Own Words

In an industry as full of folklore and puffery as watchmaking, it is refreshing to uncover first-hand knowledge. As I was researching the history of Zénith, Universal, and the Martel watch factory I stumbled on a real gold mine: A 1991 interview with Charles Vermot, the watchmaker who saved the legendary El Primero watch movement from the scrap heap, and a look at how the watchmaking profession was viewed in 1991, as the industry was just recovering. I enjoyed the video enough to translate it and present it here for my readers.

Palais Invar, the First Watch Boutique in La Chaux-de-Fonds

La Chaux-de-Fonds is sometimes called "Watch City" because it is home to so much watchmaking history. It is said that "Chaux-de-Fonnier" factories produced half of the world's watches in the first half of the 20th century! It's no surprise that some historic sites are forgotten, but the Palais Invar deserves a closer look: It was one of the most recognizable buildings in La Chaux-de-Fonds for most of the 20th century, housing brands like Montre-Invar, Alpha, Venus, Le Phare, Sultana, and Jean d'Eve, and it was home to the first Salon Suisse de l'Horlogerie in 1933.

A watchmaker is nothing more than a fancy blacksmith

As some have noticed, recently we have released three short videos on YouTube. Basically, we are talking about things that are relevant to you and to us. The watch business is a two-way street, and there is always a way to make dealings more efficient, more pleasurable, and more fun.

We know why you buy watches: because you love them. And if we can assist you in some way—whether it is buying, selling, or repairing—we are here to help and serve.

We tried to highlight three topics. First, contrary to all the hype, the watch market is not dead. On the contrary—it is alive and kicking. Here is just one detail that illustrates the point: in the past nine working days, we have only bought two watches! Yes, most of you are busy wrapping up the year, but when it comes to acquiring stock, these are the slowest weeks we have had in years—if ever. https://youtu.be/Phm01t7N3Ww?

The second video is about second-hand dealing. A transactional agreement were both parties have an obligation to act ethically, honestly, and reputably. If for no other reason than the most obvious one: the Sydney market is tiny. And yes, honesty does pay off. The four tips on how to maximize your profit when selling a watch are often overlooked, but they can make a huge difference—to you, the seller. I strongly suggest you watch it. https://youtu.be/xNbdL7BO26g?

The third video is about accuracy—hands down, the most controversial aspect of horology. Understanding and accepting what is practically possible (for a mechanical watch) is the very first step on a journey called appreciation and enjoyment of watch collecting. Unfortunately for many, the journey is much bumpier: excitement with a new watch, high expectations, then bitter disappointment when accuracy turns out to be “low”. https://youtu.be/KSL9Bap0Hok?

I am sure you will find the video educational and perhaps even somewhat entertaining.

Finally, once again, on behalf of my small team, I wish you all the very best and loads of Season’s greetings. Thank you for your subscription to our mailing list and for your business, and we look forward to serving you in the years to come.

This is just crazy

Earlier this week, a customer brought in a dead Seiko Prospex chronograph. He bought it from another retailer 18 months ago—not from us. The problem was obvious: a broken stem and winding crown.

I suggested he return the watch to the original retailer, but he preferred that we do the repair. Fine by us.

We placed an order for the replacement parts on the 10th. On the 11th, Seiko shipped them. Today, they arrived in the mail.

Absolutely crazy—in the best possible way. And the cost? Less than $40 including postage. Two stems, a steel waterproof crown, and an extra crown seal.
(Andrew wasn’t sure whether the crown came with a seal, so he ordered one just in case. It turns out the crown already had one installed—still, amazing that Seiko supplies a spare part for a spare part!)
We haven’t completed the repair yet, but it’s already clear: returning this Prospex to full working order will be straightforward. Almost trivial.

The final outcome is predictable: one happy customer, a few dollars in profit, and an unbelievably quick turnaround. Another Seiko saved and ready for years of service.

You might be blown away by Seiko’s promptness, their willingness to supply parts, and their commitment to keeping the dream alive.

But you shouldn’t be.

Seiko is simply doing the most basic, most economically logical, and most customer-oriented thing a reputable watch manufacturer should do.

This is how the industry worked since the first branded watch rolled off the bench 120 years ago. Independent watch repairers were always the link between manufacturer and owner—supporting both sides, offering skill, saving time, saving money.

So why in the world can we no longer obtain parts for Rolex, Omega, JLC, Breitling—practically any modern Swiss brand?

Ask the Swiss brands, and they’ll tell you that we—Australian independent watchmakers—are too old, too dumb, and too unwilling to invest. Useless. Unnecessary. And if that insult isn’t enough, they’ll claim that by restricting access to parts, they’re protecting you from us—from our supposed incompetence and inability to serve you properly.

Of course, you know this is nonsense.

While they blame us and deny us parts, they continue ripping you off with outrageous charges, unnecessary repairs, and months-long wait times. It’s monopolistic abuse of power—and in any country that values consumer protection, it should be illegal.

Arrogant bastards.

I won’t beat around the bush: the day Seiko closes our spare parts account will be the last day of my watchmaking career. Not because Seiko repairs keep us financially afloat, but because everyone else has beaten us down, ridiculed us, and stripped our dignity to the point where losing Seiko would simply be the end of the road.

I only hope that what we offer Seiko continues to be seen as valuable. That our relationship continues and grows. That Seiko becomes an even stronger player in the Australian market, and that you keep enjoying fine Japanese watchmaking—proudly wearing a Seiko.

One thing is certain, proven over the past decade: we are not dumb, too old, or unwilling to invest. On the contrary—we are young, extremely smart, and fully capable of making anything from a single tiny watch part to complex space-grade devices.

And you know this. And that’s what matters.

Thank you, Seiko—and a very Happy and Merry New Year.

Clueless flippers

If you are even casually interested in YouTube watch channels, you must have noticed an avalanche of videos warning you that “watch collecting is dead,” “the market has collapsed,” and that you “must sell now before it’s too late.”
The doom and gloom. The horological apocalypse of unimaginable magnitude.

These creators and “watch gurus” are the same fools who, only a year or two ago, were telling you that investing in watches was a smart way to make money — and have fun.

The truth is simple: all those videos come from small-time flippers on limited budgets, whose main activity is YouTubing and e-begging. They feed on gossip and stir up controversy. They are in the game for clicks.

As a long-time subscriber to my daily newsletters, you have a perfect opportunity to see what stock is available, the volumes, prices, trends, what’s popular — and what’s not.

We operate in the entry- to mid-price level, with an average sale of pre-owned Swiss watches at around $6,500. So the facts below reflect that segment. However, this is the price band with the most market activity, and the one of greatest interest to novice and intermediate collectors and enthusiasts. As such, it represents overall trends accurately.

Fact 1
Good quality stock, priced attractively, is almost impossible to find. There is a strong demand for extra-fine, pre-loved Omega, Breitling, Cartier, Rolex and numerous other brands. This demand is constant and unaffected by the economy, interest rates, inflation, or disposable income.
A four-bedroom house on a large block in a leafy suburb with an ocean view will always find a buyer. And so will a mint 1990s Omega Moonwatch.

Fact 2
We see no slowdown in the watch trade. Yes, the COVID years were significantly busier, but COVID was a once-in-a-lifetime anomaly.
We buy and sell multiple watches every day. Most go to newsletter subscribers, but many are sold in our shop, through our website, or via personal recommendation. Business as usual.

Fact 3
We have not seen a major collection liquidation in years. The last time we bought 25 watches in one go, from a single seller, was well before COVID. Collectors are not selling en masse. If we can buy five pieces at once, we consider that a major volume deal.

Fact 4
Prices of new watches are going up — and they will continue to go up.
Manufacturing costs, labour costs, energy costs, and the cost of modern machinery in Europe are constantly rising. The Swiss are not newcomers to horology; they’ve been playing the luxury watch game for two centuries. They know when to increase production and when to slow down. They’ve been through every financial crisis and are playing a long game.
A Swiss industrialist is cashed-up, old-money, debt-free, and running a manufacturing facility that has specialised in a particular field for generations. The economics of watchmaking will not change even if you wake up tomorrow to news that Russia has resumed supplying cheap oil and gas to Europe on a scale never seen before. It won’t happen — so don’t hold your breath. Rolex, Patek, Cartier, Omega and Breitling are not going out of business.
Consequently, prices of fine pre-owned stock will continue to rise.

Don’t waste your time on clueless YouTube fools. But if you’re still puzzled by the trends, ask yourself a simple question: Am I buying a watch next year or not?
I bet you will.

Michel Cohen

If you’re looking for an hour and a half of documentary drama loaded with twists and turns, here’s a gem that will keep you glued: French art dealer Michel Cohen built trust with galleries before vanishing with $50 million in stolen artwork, leaving dealers searching for answers decades later.

Nothing beats the real-life story of a crook. You’ll love it. But beyond the pure entertainment value, there’s a deeper conundrum to be unravelled: when, and under what circumstances, does an honest person turn into a criminal? I’m not going to spoil your enjoyment, but here’s a clue: it often starts with good intentions—and a failure to honour a deal.

In business, a handshake signifies trust, respect, agreement and professionalism. A handshake is the seal on the deal, the signature on the contract—the rock-solid, unshakeable commitment that money and goods will be exchanged. But a seal can come in many forms: raising a hand at an auction, a nod, or a simple “yes” in reply to an email.

Watch dealing is no different from art dealing—or any dealing, for that matter. It is built on trust, respect, and iron-clad commitment. Failing to proceed after a deal is done and sealed is simply disrespectful and damaging to both parties. I’m not going to beat around the bush: those who fail to honour a commitment are not just time-wasters. They are a cancer to our business, and they are removed from our books as customers and from our mailing list as subscribers instantly. No second chances. Ever.

The world is full of honest people—and we are here to serve them.

She won't be right

Stewart Brand is one of those individuals who always thinks differently. Trying to encapsulate his opus would be futile, but to get just a taste of Brand, the starting point has to be his monumental work, The Whole Earth Catalog—a catalog, an assortment of things that serve as useful "tools": books, maps, garden implements, specialized clothing, carpenters' and masons' tools, forestry gear, tents, welding equipment, professional journals, early synthesizers, and personal computers. The catalog also described where these things could be located or purchased. Its publication coincided with the great wave of social and cultural experimentation in the 1970s, the convention-breaking, and the "do it yourself" attitude associated with the "counterculture." It’s the kind of book Noah might have written while awaiting the flood.

Brand is 86 but continues to write vigorously. His new, soon-to-be-released book is already being labelled a 'future classic.' Titled Maintenance of Everything, it is the first in-depth exploration of maintenance—and a powerful argument for its civilizational importance.

"Maintenance is what keeps everything going. It’s what keeps life going. Yet it’s also easy to shirk or defer—until the thing breaks, the system falters, and everything stops. The apparent paradox is profound: Maintenance is absolutely necessary, and maintenance is optional."

As publisher explains, the book begins with "a dramatic contest of maintenance styles under life-critical conditions: the Golden Globe around-the-world solo sailboat race of 1968. It goes on to explore the insights that can be gleaned from vehicle maintenance, from the zeal of motorcycle maintainers to the maintenance philosophies that fought for dominance in the auto industry, to the state of electric vehicle manufacturing today. There are absorbing detours into the evolution of precision in manufacturing, the enduring importance of manuals, sustainment in the military, and the never-ending battle against corrosion."

Maintenance of Everything is a sophisticated, provocative call to expand what we mean by "maintenance"—not just the tiresome preventative tasks but the whole grand process of keeping a thing going. It invites us to understand not only the profound impact maintenance has on our daily lives but also why taking responsibility for maintaining something—whether a motorcycle, a monument, or our very planet—can be a radical act.

In today’s digital world, buying a paperback may sound retrograde, even archaically trivial. Yet it’s possible that our grandchildren will one day need to restart civilization—and in that moment, they will be in even greater need of thinkers like Brand. The future of humanity is both terrifying and exhilarating!

Something still does

The latest incarnation of the Moonwatch is the Co-Axial escapement calibre 3861 — essentially, the old 1861 with a new heart.
Obviously, the “Co-Axialization” across Omega’s entire range of movements has not spared the last true straight-lever legend.

Without exception, every watchmaker worth their reputation would argue that the Co-Axial escapement is hardly a step forward in Omega’s evolution — and certainly not a seismic, earth-shaking event in global horology. While it does offer some negligible benefits in terms of timekeeping, the selling point has always been framed around claims of longer service intervals due to reduced wear and tear and less reliance on lubrication.

Yet the escapement is just one of many building blocks inside a watch, and improving a single link in the chain does not necessarily make the whole chain stronger.
Over the past couple of years, we have worked on a number of new 3861 Moonwatches. Obviously, I am speaking from our own limited experience, based on a very small sample, but a pattern is emerging: there appears to be an issue with lubrication at the centre wheel.
The steel pivot running inside the bronze bushing tends to seize up. Whether this is due to inadequate lubricant, improper application, or incorrect quantity — it’s hard to say. But something is definitely off. A two- or three-year-old watch should not be developing power loss issues so prematurely. It would be really helpful if Omega commented, but I suspect a public statement is highly unlikely.

Again, I am not pointing fingers — merely reporting what we have observed.

However, there is another issue with the latest batches of Moonwatches that bothers me greatly: the decoration.
The pattern on the mainplate is known as Geneva stripes. This traditional technique is now applied with modern CNC machinery, but extreme care must be taken not to alter the tool’s speed or angle of movement across the surface, as this results in an uneven and irregular finish.

The key to Geneva striping is uniformity — and what we see, even on watches with display casebacks, is anything but refined, regular, or precise.

Not only do the stripes vary significantly from watch to watch, but even within a single movement. The balance cock and bridges often look as though they were produced with a great deal of inconsistency.

The pictures say it all.

Here are three photos of the 3861 movement. You can see that the balance cock, 4th wheel bridge, and main bridge stripes are finished very differently.
And here is another lot, from a different watch.
I am trying to remain calm, professional, and even as kind as possible — but this is Seagull-level decoration.
It would be unacceptable on a $3,000 watch, let alone on a $15,000 flagship model. Many makers have mastered CNC Geneva striping to absolute perfection — Grand Seiko and Patek Philippe, for example. Even a lesser Swiss-made movement like the Soprod, decorated in Switzerland for our Mark I and Mark II watches, offers far greater consistency and visual pleasure.
The truth is, the Speedmaster Professional 321 and 861 movements were never intended as breathtaking examples of horological decoration. These were hardworking, robust, and reliable chronographs — easy to service and built to last for decades, running ten, twenty, even thirty years without attention.
Unlike those legendary pieces, the latest Moonwatch lives in a different space — marketed and sold to a different kind of collector, at a price only they could justify.

If you’re in doubt — whether to invest in a brand-new piece or a vintage Speedmaster from the ’70s or ’80s — my suggestion is to take your time. I always say: nothing beats a brand-new watch.
But today, I feel — something still does.
There is no doubt that most readers will struggle to see the difference in finishes and perhaps ask, “What’s really wrong here?” The best way to answer that question is to compare Omega’s decoration with that of A. Lange & Söhne. The benchmark was set a long time ago — if it doesn’t look like a Lange, then there’s plenty of room for improvement.

Rolex Explorer Restoration, Part 2.

A couple of weeks ago, we left you with images of a completely rusted-out Rolex Explorer in pieces. At first glance, it looked like a hopeless case but as any restorer knows, the real story is in the details.

The process begins with carefully removing every component from the main plate. Rust, stubborn and unforgiving, is painstakingly scraped away by hand with a soft wooden stick. Each crevice is coaxed clean, then the plate is soaked in oil, scrubbed again by hand, and finally given a gentle ultrasonic bath- a sort of spa day for this weary timepiece.

Next comes the delicate task of removing all broken and corroded steel screws. The main plate itself is brass, plated with rhodium to give it that signature “white” sheen, and here lies the trick: steel parts are best dissolved rather than forced out. A soak in vinegar for two to three days works like magic, leaving the brass unharmed while the rusted steel vanishes.

Before this acidic bath, of course, every jewel and steel pin is carefully removed, tucked away to return later. The result? A main plate reborn, etched clean, jewels reinstalled, and ready for the next chapter.
And now begins the real adventure: sourcing original vintage Rolex parts. Some will arrive as pristine new-old-stock treasures, others salvaged from donor watches -each piece a tiny victory. With 50 to 60 parts required, patience is key. Delays are inevitable, and the occasional wrong part is almost a rite of passage.

But that’s all part of the journey. Restoration is never a sprint, it’s a conversation with time itself.

Yet all this epic restoration could be a piece of cake if Rolex would simply release spare parts to independent watchmakers. There are millions of those spares sitting neatly stacked in Swiss bunkers. And if not, all those parts could easily be re-made, distributed, and supplied. But Rolex won’t budge.

The hypocrisy and corporate greed of Swiss mega-brands is just pathetic. Not just in the corporate sense, but in their indecency, blaming watchmakers for a “lack of skills.” Ask Rolex, “Why won’t you supply spares to watchmakers?” and the answer is always the same: Only Rolex Service Centre can service a Rolex watch to Rolex standards.

But that’s a lie. As I type this, our team of machinists is making superbly complex, ultra-tight-tolerance parts for the space and medical industries - fields with standards far stricter than anything in horology. Day after day, batch after batch, we produce those parts and supply them with full metrological reports as proof they meet every engineering and performance specification. Replacing a worn-out part in a watch isn’t rocket science; it’s just a job for a technician.

I asked AI to generate a picture of an old watchmaker screaming “Release the parts!”
And the image it produced - an old man working in a dim, primitive workshop, fixing outdated watches — is exactly the picture Rolex wants you to have in your mind. “Don’t take your watch to those old, small, untrained, unsightly, non-corporate watchmakers,” they say. “They’ll cause more damage, they’ll fit fake parts, they don’t know what they’re doing.”

How about this, Rolex: just release the parts. We’ll take care of our customers to the standards they expect and demand, at a price they’re happy to pay, with turnaround times in weeks, not months.

Release the parts - and shut up.

(To be continued.)

Is the latest Alpinist worth $1,550?

There is no doubt that the freshly released teal, green, and black Alpinists are not just eye-catching watches but also well-made, robust pieces. The finish is impeccable. If there ever was a Japanese-made, Rolex-looking case- this is it. Smooth, low-profile steel bezel and sapphire crystal with cyclops – just perfect.

The Oyster-style stainless steel bracelet with deployant clasp looks every bit Swiss in design and execution.

The same goes for the dial and hands: the depth and contrast is to the highest standard of horology.
Yes, it’s mass-produced, but mass-produced in Japan, using the latest high-tech machinery and techniques.

The new Alpinist is fitted with the 6R55 movement. It has a 3-day power reserve and is also made in Japan.
The straight-line decoration and gold-plated rotor won’t blow away a serious watch collector, but that’s expected. I was far more interested in the actual timekeeping: from six pieces tested, the “worst” performer ran at +13 seconds per day, and the best at +2 seconds — with an impressively healthy amplitude of 288 degrees. Considering Seiko’s specs for the 6R55 are -15/+25 seconds per day, these results were far better than expected. A small curiosity: the exact same calibre is used in the latest King Seiko line.
The green dial model comes on a brown strap, while the other two are on bracelet.

The only word of caution concerns the winding crown: it’s small and rather delicate for a 200 m water-resistant watch. If you have large fingers, be very careful when screwing it down — the alignment is precise, and an impatient user will sooner or later cross-thread it. Again, if you have a big wrist and big fingers, the Alpinist may not be the best choice for you — especially if patience isn’t your strong suit.

Now, back to the original question: is the new Alpinist worth $1,550? Absolutely yes.

Should you pay full retail? Absolutely not.

There’s an unspoken rule that newly released watches shouldn’t be discounted — and I’m all for it. However, as a subscriber to this fine newsletter, you are a special customer who deserves a special price.

Of course, if you wish to pay full retail, you’re more than welcome to place your order now. But if you’d prefer to chat discreetly about it, simply hit “reply” to this email and I’ll see what I can do for you.

All three models are in stock and ready for immediate delivery.

It takes two

As a long-time follower of our project, you’ve heard this countless times: it takes two to make a watch — a watchmaker and a machinist. In our fifth generation, we’ve got them both, in one go.

Let me make myself clear: this world needs more watchmakers. And starting early is a must.

Here’s an amazing fact — children can start to learn to count as early as six months by recognizing quantities. Most can recite numbers up to ten by the age of two. However, the ability to truly connect numbers to objects — known as one-to-one correspondence — develops a bit later, typically around the age of three.

Counting is fundamental to measuring, and measuring is essential to visualizing concepts — which leads to making. From then on, it’s just a matter of commitment and practice. It is well documented that in 19th-century England, children as young as five were helping assemble pocket watch fusee chains. By the age of ten, many worked full-time in watch production, while others were apprentices to master watchmakers.

The two sets of Bergeon tweezers have been sitting quietly for a number of years to mark the occasion. And on the day the babies open their eyes, I’ve ordered two Mitutoyo calipers — not the digital readout ones, but old-fashioned verniers.

For now, it’s all going to be about love, food, and shelter. But in no time, a new chapter will be written — with the help of the Almighty and our unquenchable determination.

A life worth living.

Watching history happen

The queue is massive, spiralling around the block. Photo taken 15 minutes ago. And no, they are not waiting for a Rolex shop to open.

As predicted a few weeks ago: the bubble has arrived — the big, beautiful bubble called the run on gold merchants.

An onlooker unfamiliar with the situation might wonder: what are all these people lining up for? To sell their gold and take advantage of high prices? To buy more, fearing that money will soon be worthless? Yes, a few are queueing for those reasons. But the vast majority are simply desperate to collect actual gold — to convert an “I owe you” piece of paper into real, physical metal.

The frenzy and the urgency? Simple: there’s far more paper, more promissory notes, more contracts, than there is actual gold in the entire world.

And as the price of gold continues to bubble, there will be more demand, more pressure — until the pressure cooker finally blows its lid, and Lima beans hit the ceiling fan.

Back in June 2015, when a batch of twenty Rebelde 18k gold watches was delivered to Rebelde ambassadors, history was made. The first steel model had been released only 13 months earlier — and it was the first time in Australia that a microbrand, still in its infancy, released massive 18k yellow and rose gold watches. And massive they were: 135-gram monsters — not hollowed-out or gold-clad cases, not cheaply cast, but thick, heavy, solid-gold, three-piece machined cases.

The retail price was $13,980. Today, those 18k Rebelde watches are worth twice that.

And their value is not set by me, or by Chrono24, or an auction house, or a group of cashed-up collectors who worship microbrands. That’s the price any gold merchant — anywhere in the world, from Mumbai to Moscow, Hong Kong to Johannesburg, or Buenos Aires — would pay for my watch. Not because they value my horological genius, my name, or the “Australian brand.” For that, they couldn’t care less. They pay for the gold itself.

To my ambassadors who invested wisely in Rebelde: well done — you’ve doubled your money. Plus, you’re wearing a watch of genuine horological significance. You were backers of a project that will never be repeated — or at least not in the next decade — by any Australian microbrand.

When someone once asked, “Why would anyone invest in a gold Rebelde?” I answered in a blog post — more than 10 years ago.
Today, that answer has been fully validated — and it’s as relevant as ever.
What a journey!

I promised, and I delivered. Handsomely. Smartly. And much faster than anyone could have anticipated. Myself included.

Down the Rabbit Hole of Gold

Over the past few days, a number of subscribers have reached out wanting to sell their gold watches. With gold hitting an all-time high, this is hardly a surprise. In fact, I'll probably be doing the same myself in the near future.

First of all, we're talking about scrap gold, not your shiny Rolex Presidents. Scrap gold comes from broken watches, bracelets, links, and jewellery - sent to a refiner to be melted down and reused. And yes, now is the perfect time to turn junk into gold.

However, the process of turning scrap into bullion is a bit tricky, to say the least. Having gone through this journey a number of times, I speak from experience.

Basically, you have two options:
Sell your scrap to businesses that buy scrap gold, or deal directly with a refinery.

In the first case, the easiest way is to find a local buyer online, make an appointment, and show up with your scrap.
The problem? They'll rip you off. You won't get anywhere near what an online gold scrap calculator might estimate. The price they pay is significantly lower than the gold spot price. They'll also complain about all sorts of things - purity, carat, content - all being "unknown" or "too risky." But you'll walk away with cash in hand.

Dealing with refiners directly comes with its own challenges. The most obvious one: as wholesale businesses, they're primarily interested in large quantities of scrap metal. One broken watch and a couple of earrings aren't worth their trouble.

There are also numerous "fixed costs" associated with refining. The assay fee - a charge to test and determine the purity of your gold - can be either a flat rate or a percentage of the total value. Some refineries waive assay fees for large quantities, while others charge for incoming weight, retention, and handling, in addition to the assay itself.

Then there's the refining time. It can take weeks to get your 24K gold back. But what really makes me nervous is the downright dodginess of the process. You're expected to place complete trust in the refiner, while having no leverage or oversight whatsoever. You leave your scrap - and whatever comes out of it is what it is.

For example, the common procedure is to have your scrap pre-sorted (9K, 14K, 18K, 24K), weighed, and recorded, then weighed again at the refinery. However, the last time I handed over my metal, I was simply asked to leave it behind - to be weighed later - because, apparently, "the scales weren't working." And I did. There's no point arguing with a refiner. It's a take-it-or-leave-it deal.

The upside is that, at the end of the refining process, you'll receive a lump of pure 24K gold (plus some silver), and you'll have the option to sell it on the spot at the actual market rate, have it stored, or take physical possession. You'll also receive a proper receipt.

To be fair, gold merchants and refiners are constant targets for forgers and crooks, so their lives aren't easy either. Dealing directly with them requires experience - and strong nerves. And yes, they're all the same.

Of course, if you have an 18K gold watch you'd like to sell for scrap, or any fine modern or vintage piece similar to our current stock, feel free to reach out. I'll be happy to make you an offer upon inspection.
But then again, selling any watch for its metal value feels almost sacrilegious. Take, for instance, this 1920s gold pocket watch - broken, missing parts, far beyond restoration. And yet, on its weary case back, a tender engraving remains: two birds hovering over a nest, guarding a single egg. The message could not be more heartfelt - a young family, full of hope, awaiting new life. One can almost imagine it: a father-in-law's gift, his blessing engraved in gold.

So, to scrap it, or not?

You tell me.

Important – Please Read

Especially if you are new to watch collecting.

Sydney Watches Pty Ltd is a licensed second-hand dealer. We buy and sell preowned watches.
Yes, many of them are in like-new condition, and some even still unwrapped, but technically and legally, they are all second-hand goods.
If you are an existing customer or a long-time subscriber, you already know how proud I am of what I do.
Finding fine preowned stock at the right price is extremely difficult. My service to watch collectors is highly valued, and over the past 30 years, I’ve sold more than 10,000 high-grade preowned watches. That is actually a conservative estimate.
The bottom line is simple: I know what I’m doing, I’ve been doing it for decades, and I’m happy to continue selling second-hand watches.
All watches offered are 100% genuine. Selling replicas or fake watches is illegal in Australia—and even if it weren’t, I would never sell fakes.

A common question: How old is the watch?

Before I answer, let me make one important point: to me, age is almost irrelevant. What truly matters is condition. A five-year-old watch in unworn, like-new condition is worth more than a one-year-old watch that has been heavily worn. However, to a novice collector—or especially to a first-time buyer—this may not be obvious. It’s natural to focus on age: the newer, the better. Most buyers are happy to learn otherwise, and after a bit of “education” and a few examples, their focus shifts to condition. However, some buyers remain fixated on age, and age only. If that’s you, you’ll be better off buying a brand-new watch from an authorised dealer. Nothing beats a brand-new watch.

Determining the age of a preowned watch

The only reliable and legally valid way to determine the age of a preowned watch is by referring to the date of sale recorded on the warranty card—filled in by the manufacturer or authorised dealer.
In reality, watches on the preowned market typically fall into one of three categories:
  1. Watch only – no warranty card or receipt/invoice (“no papers”).
  2. Watch with warranty card – but no date of sale recorded (“open papers”).
  3. Watch with warranty card and date of sale recorded (“with papers”).
Here is an example open papers warranty and one showing the actual date of sale:
In the first two cases, it’s not possible to determine the exact age of the watch.
Instead, I provide an estimate based on several factors. In such cases, we usually refer to the watch as being manufactured within a certain period—often a span of 5–10 years or a decade—rather than in a specific year.

1. Should you buy a watch with no papers?

That’s entirely up to you.
Often, a watch without papers is cheaper than an identical model with papers. Booklets, warranty cards, invoices, and valuations are often stored separately from the watch—and sometimes they’re simply lost, discarded, or “safely stored” and never found again.
For most buyers, papers are far less important than overall condition.

2. Watches with open papers

Watches with open papers (no date of sale recorded) are less common today than they were 10 or 20 years ago, but many are still in circulation.
In the past, authorised dealers were often willing to leave the date blank at the customer’s request. I’ve seen open papers from Rolex, Omega, IWC and Cartier—you name it—and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.
3. Watches with papers and factory warranty

A common question: How much of the manufacturer’s warranty is left?
For example: if Omega offers a 5-year warranty on a new watch, and the watch is now 2 years old, is it still covered for another 3 years?
The honest answer: I don’t know—and I don’t care.
Remember, I am a second-hand dealer. I provide my own 1-year warranty on all watches I sell. I don’t represent Omega, and I can’t guarantee whether they will honour their international warranty obligation in cases of transferred ownership.
If they do—fantastic. If they don’t—then perhaps you should buy a brand-new watch directly from Omega instead of a preowned one.
In conclusion, you can’t have your cake and eat it too. New watches: full price, full factory warranty. Preowned watches: savings, one-year dealer warranty.

What Kind Are You?

Watches aren’t going anywhere. No matter what 'big tech' tries to strap onto our wrists, there will always be people who buy, collect, and actually wear watches. I don’t see that slowing down for the next 30 years.

But the so-called collectors aren’t one big happy family. They’re a jungle of sub-species - each with its own quirks, excuses, and questionable logic. After decades in the trade, here’s my field guide:

The Magpie
Collects purely by eye. Beauty, shape, style - if it sparkles, it’s in. The collection ends up a dozen or so watches with nothing in common… except they all look fantastic. Worn daily, shuffled like a deck of cards.

The Sentimentals
A drawer full of Dad’s, Mum’s, and Uncle’s watches. The crown jewel? The twenty-first. Milestone pieces with heart-swelling stories, but almost no resale value. To them, that’s the point.

It’s All About Money
The biggest group of all. Watches aren’t worn - they’re spreadsheets. Each piece is a “strategic asset,” purchased only to appreciate in value. Collecting? No. Market speculation in steel cases.

The Hoarders
Quantity over everything. Two hundred watches and counting - cheap, pricey, broken, doesn’t matter. The joy isn’t in wearing them, it’s in stacking them like firewood.

The One-Watch Guy
Owns a single watch but still stares longingly at every new release. His loyalty is ironclad, but he lives in permanent horological FOMO. Prudence has its virtues… but also its torments.

The Purist
Obsessive, tunnel-visioned, and miserable. Worships craftsmanship - but only if stamped with his chosen brand’s logo. Often correct, rarely fun at parties.

The Dodgy Guy
Knows shit nothing about watches, but needs somewhere to park excess cash. Approach with caution - or better yet, don’t approach at all.

The Bling Dude
Dodgy’s younger cousin. Breitlings iced like a bakery, Rolex Presidents with aftermarket bezels, and other atrocities. Proof that money can’t buy anything of importance..

The Sophisticated Collector
My favourite. Builds thematic collections - often chronographs - tracing a brand’s evolution. Thrives on the hunt for that elusive missing piece. Informed, connected, respectful. The grown-up in the room.

The Rolex Man
Nothing beats Rolex. A full-blown love affair with his AD. His fantasy? A long weekend in Geneva - with the AD, of course.

The Surgeon / Lawyer
After an 18-hour shift, drenched in blood or buried in briefs, he has just enough strength for one click: “I’ll take it.” For him, a new watch isn’t a trophy, it’s therapy. Brutal, honest, well-earned. Respect.

"I like it"
He just likes it - a perfect fit on the wrist, a nice dial, really good looking. He’s happy.
No need to overthink, overdo, or impress anyone. Life is simple, worth living. Watches are fun - meant to be liked and enjoyed. It’s as simple as that.

Happy collecting.

Rebel without a cause

On Wednesday night, I stayed behind the bench longer than usual. Nothing beats the most productive hour of the evening - half past seven, when the city slowly falls asleep.

Around eight, as it was time to call it a night, I was still roaming through the junk box, looking for a "dollar deal" for tomorrow’s premium subscribers. And there it was: a perfect candidate. An old Citizen Diver, still ticking. With a massive scratch on the case - which, thirty years ago, rendered it unsellable.
“I reckon I can polish this one in less than fifteen minutes!” I exclaimed loudly.

“No, you won’t,” a voice replied.

I was quite sure the staff had left two hours earlier. I looked over my shoulder, but there was no one in the office.

“Don’t you dare touch me! Put me back in the junk box!” said the Citizen.

“Worry not, mate. In no time you’ll be as good as new,” I replied.

“Leave me alone, I am sovereign. Besides, you are not a qualified Citizen repairman,” said the watch.

“Listen, you shitter, I am a third-generation master watchmaker, and you are a worthless piece of junk. You may be worth a dollar - but not yet.”

Swiftly, the Citizen was subjected to a buff. But only a second later, it flew away from the spinning wheel, hit the ceiling, then disappeared into the darkness under the bench.

I arrived home tired and worried. That stupid shitter could have hit me right between the eyes.

Now, you may say this is all nonsense - watches can’t talk. Fine. But hear this.

The next day, I arrived early. I had completely forgotten about the incident. But then I remembered that I still needed a bargain to feature. The moment I pulled open the drawer with pocket watches, I heard another voice:

“Herr Hakko, we need to talk!”

There were more than fifty watches in that drawer, but I knew exactly which one was complaining: a 1940s German field piece, a Grana, with a loud escape wheel.

“What do you want now? I am busy! Keep it short!”

The usual stuff. He was complaining that he didn’t want to be in the same drawer with 'asiaten'-  Seiko Railway pocket watches.

“I want to be placed in the middle of the display case, where I deserve to be! I am not just an ordinary pocket watch - I was built for Wehrmacht!”

Yes, the delusional self-grandeur stuff I’ve heard so many times before.

“No way. In this shop, all watches are equal. Your glory days are long gone - you’ll remain where you are.”

“On display, to be seen and heard! I am built to last forever!” he demanded.

“You can’t go on display. Your radium hands still glow in the dark, you are a radioactive hazard. A danger to customers. Toxic to everyone.

But he wouldn’t listen.

With a swift swing of the Bergeon case opener, I snapped Grana’s balance staff.

My shop. My rules.

The Dead Wogmaster

The past few weeks have been sheer madness. Andrew and I are drowning in repairs – the bench is overflowing. I can’t quite put my finger on why. Maybe it’s the weather. Maybe it’s because watchmakers have stopped taking apprentices, or because Omega now quotes a 12-month turnaround time. Who knows. What I do know is that more often than not, we’re forced to turn away jobs that simply don’t make sense – either unprofitable, or with parts that no longer exist.

And then, amongst the mountain of Omega and Rolex, a familiar face arrived from Queensland: a Seiko Wogmaster. Yes, the very one we sold not that long ago. I knew it was coming, because I’d taken the customer’s call. New watches don’t just die without a reason. I was expecting something small – a loose screw, maybe a jammed rotor.

On the outside, the watch looked perfect. No scratches, no dents, nothing. But the moment I removed the case back, the story was written in plain sight: the hairspring was a mess, hopelessly tangled. It only happens when a watch takes a fall, or suffers a heavy knock – golf swings are notorious.

But here’s the part that moved me: once the hairspring was set right, this humble Seiko 5 came back to life with an astonishing amplitude, running at +2 seconds a day. Better than most Swiss luxury watches I see on this very bench. That’s not luck. That’s Seiko.

I love Seiko. Especially the ones we’ve sold. They have soul. They remind me why I became a watchmaker in the first place.

And no, I won’t tell the customer that his watch was dropped. He doesn’t need to carry that guilt. This repair is on me, free of charge – return postage included.

Why? Because when I hold a Seiko in my hands, I feel my grandfather and my father standing beside me. Both of them spent their lives repairing Seikos. When I breathe life back into one, I feel them with me. A Wogmaster on my bench is not just a repair – it’s a family reunion.

That feeling never comes with any other brand. Only Seiko. Only the Wogmaster.

So, who buys your watch?

This week we ran out of blue Curl Curl dials.

For the Mark II project, this is a bit uncomfortable to say the least. Like Corinthian running out of lamb. Like Cindy running out of red lipstick. Like Three Beans running out of coffee beans. Simply unthinkable.

To the cynics: No, we have not run out of dial nameplates bearing my name. Plenty of those in stock, thanks for asking.

Yet as trivial as it could be to the naked eye, it is a detail like the pocket in the dial where the name plate sits, that makes the Curl Curl dial challenging to make.
The cut-out is created with a tool that has a radius of just 0.15 millimetres. That is 150 microns. Keep in mind that we are milling hard medical grade titanium, not soft silver or brass. Perfection takes time. There are not many dial manufacturers who can do what we do here in Brookvale, not even in Switzerland.

The Curl Curl dial is actually a three dimensional structure. Yes, the actual waves hitting the shore, are ‘guilloched’ in Titanium. Yet at the same time, they are so small, so fine, that they appear on the surface of the dial as nothing more than a fine line.

And here is the nameplate siting in its pocket, under magnification.
For the past couple of weeks, I have had the privilege to talk to a number of watch enthusiasts who visited our office for one reason only: To see the Mark II in person. Whether the watch impressed them or not, is not for me to say, but those who actually make ‘things’ themselves, who use tools, who design and engineer, were simply blown away with our ability to shape metal, like it is butter. Those who care, understand.

If we are to be put in a box of horology, it would be one labelled ‘very difficult to make’. And we are more than happy with that.
The actual tool is manufactured by a Japanese toolmaker specialist. And here is an interesting story:
After we ordered a dozen or so of the tool, they sent us a polite email asking what product we actually make that requires one of the smallest tools in their entire range?
Josh replied with a photo of the dial pocket. A few days later, Josh was invited by the Japanese to visit their factory. He was the first non-Japanese person to have a full factory tour, to see how the tools are actually made.
Yes, they paid for return tickets for both Josh and his wife, as well as accommodation.

Pounding

There is a thin line between what one might call a fine collection of curious objects and a pile of rubbish. Often, I find myself on the other side.

A perfect example: a 1950s British Morse key, manufactured by Walters Electrical. A bit crude in execution, but very solid - built to be pounded on for decades. This particular example was used by a Post Office Morse code operator. Numbered and signed!

Unfortunately, with so many ongoing projects, the decision was made to let it go. The price was set at a mere $50 which is probably less than what I paid for it twenty years ago. A post on a Facebook ham radio group late Sunday generated plenty of likes and one potential buyer.

“Hey, is the key still available? Can I come and collect it? I live close by.”

It was already past 7pm, cold and wet, and the last thing I wanted was a stranger knocking on my door. Radio amateurs are notoriously nosey. I know them well. He simply wanted to be invited in, to see what else might be of interest. And that is precisely what I wanted to avoid.

“Happy to ship it. Alternatively, you can collect it from my city office.”

“What time?”

“Any time during business hours.”

That was it.

Yesterday, he texted again, asking - Would I be able to stay open until 6pm?

"No, we close at five."

He was persistent. “Then I can come to your home after 8?”

At that point, I’d had enough. “Bloody hell, no. I hate people. Sorry.”

I’ll spare you the details, but my fellow amateur quickly went from passive-aggressive to full-blown mental. He was brutally offended by my refusal to give in; by my right to privacy; by a basic human urge to keep lunatic strangers away, to set a boundary. But what offended him the most was my right to express such feelings boldly.

“Hate” may be a strong word, but sometimes, it’s the only word idiots understand.

Like me, you probably have a watch or two you'd be happy to part with. A watch collection is like a bonsai tree, trimming and pruning is what makes it beautiful. But if you’re tempted to sell privately, just one tip: do not communicate outside business hours.

Texting late makes you vulnerable. You're simply signalling that you have no boundaries. And people with no boundaries are easily manipulated. Groomers and psychopaths are professionals. You'll stand no chance.

Yes, the key is still for sale. Dah di dah.

Every second counts. Or does it?
Last week, I got an email from a watch owner who was fairly disturbed. He took his Tudor watch to a Tudor service centre, and they refused to help.
He called later that day. "What was the problem, and why could Tudor not help?" I’ve asked.
The watch was losing time. Precisely half a second per day. The caller was annoyed with the fact that the maker dismissed his complaint by simply stating that the timekeeping is well within the chronometer specification for a five year old mechanical automatic watch.

And I could not agree more. Actually, I pointed out that he should consider himself lucky - the timekeeping is absolutely perfect, and there is no need for adjustment.

He disagreed. "I would be much happier if the watch was gaining one second per day rather than losing half."

Let me put things into perspective. It is like a person earning $46,200 per day asking their boss for a pay rise of 50 cents.

I am not going to bore you with details, but the longer we talked, the more determined he was that he was 'in the right' and that I should do my absolute best to solve his problem.

Thirty years ago I would have ended the conversation by simply hanging up. Twenty years ago, I would have made a sarcastic remark, and then hung up.
But nowadays, I am a different man: a mellow, woke wimp. "Sure, bring it in, I'll fix it".

The watch arrived on my bench yesterday morning. A Tudor Pelagos with an in house movement.

Assessment

The first step, prior to any adjustment was to place the watch on auto winder, and let it settle at room temperature for 24 hours. After that, the watch was placed on the timing machine, in various positions. The goal was to establish whether the customer’s observation matched the actual timekeeping recorded by the timegrapher.

The watch showed a constant rate in all positions of +0 seconds per day, and a heathy amplitude. There was no deviation except for dial down, showing -1 second per day. However this value is within the tolerance and resolution error of the timegrapher.
Pre-adjustment

The watch strap was detached, case cleaned of gunk, rinsed and dried. The watch was then left to recover for another hour at room temperature.
Adjustment

In order to gain access to the regulator, the watch case had to be removed. Tudor's new calibre MT5612 has a free-sprung balance with four adjustment screws located radially to the balance wheel, and not accessible from the top of the movement.

The mechanism had to be extracted from the case.
The adjustment screws were factory set in position so that the balance wheel is poised perfectly. Theoretically, the time adjustment would require changing the position of at least two screws to prevent a degradation of poise.

Also, the screws were machined with custom-design heads so a custom design (in my case modified) regulating tool is required.

The first step was to experimentally determine the amount of rotation of each screw that would correlate to an adjustment of 1 second, which was approximately 15 degrees. After that, the watch was re-adjusted to +0, then two opposite regulating screws were adjusted (by moving them in towards the centre) by approximately 7 degrees.

Such a fine adjustment is done purely by ‘feeling’. After the adjustment, the timegrapher read a daily error of +1 to +2 seconds.
Post-adjustment

The movement was returned to it's case, secured, and once again, the watch was placed on the timing machine. Often, compressing the movement into the case could cause variation to the adjusted value. However in the case of this Tudor mechanism, the rate remained the same, with only a slight improvement in amplitude. The watch was then water pressure tested.

Time keeping verification

The time was set to mobile phone data network, and placed on the winder for the next seven days when the actual timekeeping error will be determined.

The expectation is that the watch will keep time at a rate of around +1 second per day.

Now, if you think that the purpose of this write up is to impress you with my determination to showcase the ability to squeeze a 1 second improvement out of an already perfectly factory tuned watch, then you are grossly mistaken.

I just need to hear from you how much should I charge for all this work, consisting of 45 minutes behind the bench, 20 minutes of email and phone consultations, 15 minutes of in person consultation, the admin work related to record keeping and for providing insurance coverage on a watch left in my care?

And was it worth it? You tell me.

Public clocks could be tricky

Recently, a 1960s wall clock arrived at our workshop. It sat on a church wall for almost 60 years until it died.

An electric clock which runs quietly – until it wore itself to death. The congregation decided to replace it with a modern clock, but after a year or so, they realised that the new clock is not the same as the old one.

It was hard to pinpoint what exactly was displeasing; after all, the replacement was similar in style and shape, more accurate and was doing it’s job, as intended - keeping the preacher aware that extending the ceremony beyond noon is not just inappropriate but downright unholy. Yes, the good folk loved their rules.

The decision was made to have the old clock restored, no matter what, and money was not an issue. Comfort and conformity has no price tag. Upon inspection, I told them what they already knew: the clock is dead and beyond repair. The only solution: a complete movement replacement. A bit of a compromise, but at least, the main body will be still preserved. “What about the hands?” – they asked, unison.

Fitting an old set of hand on a new clock is quite difficult. The old hands are too heavy for a modern mechanism. There was only one compromising solution: to rebuild the old mechanism. The repair took some time, and it involved both electrical re-coiling, as well as re-bushing (making new bearings).

As I type this, I am pleased to report that the clock is running and keeping perfect time. Yes, all original, all complete, exactly as per customer’s request. Soon it will be reunited with the faithful flock. The best of all: this rebuild is free of charge. The last thing you want upon arrival at the Pearly Gates is a heated discussion over an unpaid invoice.

Your wrist watch is your private business. A public clock – displayed for all to see the time – is a tricky beast. You better choose wisely.

The writeup today is primarily intended for watch enthusiasts who follow the NH manufactured in Australia project - those who already have an NH watch, or intend to add one to their collection.

However, even if your interest in watches is broader than an investment in micro brands, you may find the communique of interest. I certainly hope you would.

Creating a watch brand from scratch is an ambitious project. Watch brands come and go, and for the past hundred or so years, many watchmakers have tried to turn a rather generic product into an immortalized, lasting, multigenerational brand name. Most of them fail.

The handful of watchmakers who succeeded were not necessarily the best, nor the most advanced makers. The most successful were those who understood that a watch is far more than a precision timekeeper, or even a tool: essentially, a watch is a fashionable luxury item.

The best examples of 'luxury horology' are traditional brands like Cartier, Patek Philippe, Rolex and recently, Richard Mille. Brands which spend huge sums of money advertising their watches primarily as luxury status symbols.

If you are to predict which brand will outlast the competition: bet on the best marketer, not the best maker. And if I am to bet my last dollar on a brand that will be here in a hundred years from now, I would put it all on Cartier. The old money luxury brand, bold and assertive.

Being a watch brand is not enough. To outlast and outsell, the prerogative is to grow and metamorphise into a luxury brand.

Yet in reality, if luxury and status are the only reasons we buy watches, then we would all wear only Cartier and Rolex. But we do not. We are drawn to different brands for different, deeply personal reasons. Aesthetics, workmanship, ergonomics, practicality, design, longevity, affordability. A wonderful horological kaleidoscope!

As you are already aware, the reason why I have invested more than 10 years on building my own brand is to prove a single point: that a small, independent Australian watchmaker is as good as any Swiss brand trained watchmaker. And in many cases, much better. With the release of our NH55 Timascus watch, that point has been made and proven beyond doubt.

Of course, the timascus project was a culmination of ten years of learning, investment in manufacturing, and training of the next generation of machinists and watchmakers. Together, we achieved much more than what I initially dreamed and hoped for. We started with a watch project and ended up with a manufacturing ability to make components at a precision and complexity level that surpasses horology.

Which in itself is a strange place to be. The fork in the road: should we continue to make watches, spend another five years developing an in house movement, invest heavily in marketing and branding - or, make high precision parts for other industries?

In both cases, the manufacturing aspect is practically the same. Yet the financial outcome could not be more different. A watch, as a product, is fundamentally different to any other assembly of precision parts.
A watch is built to last for 50 or a hundred years, exquisitely finished, and requires regular servicing. Also, it is sold one at a time, and each sale is directly related to your investment in marketing.
On the other hand, a 100 GHz waveguide, as precise as a watch, has a life span of 3 years. After that it would be either non functional or obsolete. Each waveguide is sold before being made. Actually, our customers demand is five time higher than our maximum production output. The best of all: industrial parts are completely devoid of branding, advertising and marketing to the end user. Not to mention, again, that unlike watchmaking at small microbrand scales, manufacturing of industrial parts can be fully automated.

As there is no real commercial incentive to make watches, why in the world should we continue to make them? I have no rational answer to this question, yet I know that we must.
The responsibility to continue learning, getting better, then passing that knowledge on is the only way to preserve not just our own independence, but the independence of the next generation of Australian watchmakers.
An independent watchmaker planting a microbrand is like a small organic farmer who grows his own produce, not just to feed his family and friends, but to preserve the environment, save the seeds and save the local biodiversity. Not profitable, yet priceless.

Every second of it
Earlier today, a visitor from Melbourne came in to check out the NH55. A subscriber to our newsletter and a follower of the ‘manufactured in Australia’ project. And once again, we talked about design, making, perfection, timascus, and guilloche; about precision and how difficult it is to turn an idea into a real, physical watch.

He left impressed. And that is the only thing that matters.

Quite frankly, and without fake modesty, as I type this, I am equally impressed with the outcome of the project we’ve poured our heart and soul into. NH55 is not just the most ‘made in Australia’ watch of all time but probably the last such watch in many years to come. It is a miracle, a crazy project that started ten years ago, that consumed every cent of investment at our disposal, and that required sacrifice only a person fighting for its existence is willing and able to do. But it was more than that – as we were making the watch, the watch was making us. The knowledge acquired, our ability to design, shape, and make, and our capability to manufacture at such an incredible level of precision is knowledge that could not be acquired in any other way. Priceless, ultimately rewarding, multigenerational, never to be forgotten.

And yes, it was worth it. We’ve promised, and we have delivered. Every second of it.

The best of all: our journey has just begun.

Should you invest in the most Australian watch ever? Don’t rush with the answer. But if you wish to see the watch, be impressed, and dare I say – be inspired, then stop by and check out the NH55 in person. It will be worth your time, every second of it, guaranteed.

The graceful butterfly

It is no mystery why butterflies are so often depicted in the visual arts: what could be more beautiful than the brilliant colour and pleasing symmetry of the wings, or the playful freedom of flight? The butterfly is also a symbol of love. The Greeks thought of them as a representation of mind and soul.

Yet this dial is a masterpiece on another level. The dial was made with a technique known as 'Ramolayage'. It consists of removing the material to model the relief, usually done manually on a 'guilloche-style' lathe. Reserved for the most elaborate AP and Vacheron watches, rarely seen in 'common' brands like Omega.

The technique is also known as brocading. Brocade is a decorative shuttle-woven fabric, often made in coloured silks and sometimes with gold and silver threads. The name comes from the Italian broccato meaning "embossed cloth".

Many steps ahead

When it comes to trade and commerce, we live in strange times. We are swimming against the tide of fake news, market manipulation, senseless tariffs and global uncertainty. Unchartered, shark infested waters. Good business news with optimistic outlooks are few and far between.

Last night, finally, some positivity. Once again, I was invited to the annual SEIKO dealers dinner, a rather low key, almost private event. Seiko's way of saying 'we appreciate your business'. A handful of top performing independent Seiko retailers, from all states, familiar faces, a friendly atmosphere.

The core message was delivered in a typical Japanese way: modestly, but to the point. The last financial year was Seiko Australia's best on books. Seiko is not just doing great, but setting new sales records. It feels fantastic being a part of the winning team.

More good news; thanks to a decision made by Japanese headquarters, all the profit generated in Australia, stays in Australia. Seiko's plan is to invest in advertising and training. Smart.

Yet the detail that impressed me the most: if you are a Seiko employee with 10 years of service, you are still a youngster. Most of their sales executives, sales reps, state managers and technicians have been with Seiko for fifteen, twenty and some even thirty years.
In a world where corporate loyalty is measured in months, where climbing the ladder means relentless skips from job to job, Seiko employees are happy to stay, learn, be trained, remain loyal. To us, they come across as being genuinely fulfilled, rewarded and excited. Their contribution is appreciated and valued. What more can someone ask from their employer?

The unspoken words of the event were even more powerful. Not once was there a mention of competition, Switzerland, or other brands. True to its core founding value, from the days of Kintaro Hattori - "Always one step ahead of the rest.”

Powerful industry leaders lead, fearlessly. The Seiko way, for many decades to come.

Locked in time

As I type this, in front of me is a Rebelde Titanium watch. A timepiece which represents a significant milestone on the road to independent watchmaking. The first titanium watch was assembled on the 14th of March 2018 and was immediately nicknamed ‘Tito’. I still remember that moment as if it was yesterday: a huge sense of relief that the project was a success, that all the components manufactured by numerous overseas suppliers are not just on my bench, but that they are manufactured to strict tolerances, and they fit perfectly, working together in harmony.

TiD was my first attempt to ‘deal’ with titanium. I remember months of correspondence with Japanese titanium case makers, asking dozens and dozens of questions – to which I had no answer. What titanium grade do you require? What finishes? Tolerances? Water resistance of each individual surface; the material properties of Teflon and rubber seals; their expansion properties under pressure and temperature. What type of coating, polish, scratch resistance level? Of course, I knew what I wanted, but I had no technical manufacturing knowledge to communicate my requirements to the Japanese in the way they expected. TiD was not just another white label watch; it was a genuine ‘designed and assembled in Australia’ project, started from scratch.

When it comes to the mechanism, Tito took the Rebelde brand to another level. Tanya and I travelled to Switzerland in the search for a movement maker who could offer the highest possible finishes and decoration for the trustworthy Unitas 6497. And we found it, tucked away in an unassuming wooden farm house in the heart of Canton of Bienne, was a movement design studio run by a husband and wife. We clicked instantly. “How many movements do you need”, they asked. “5,000? 10,000?” We needed one hundred. “We can do 100. No problem”. Of course, such a tiny production run came at a significant cost, but Tanya and I replied with ‘no problem’ too.

It took the movement maker almost a year to deliver one of the most beautiful honey coloured movements I’ve ever seen, finished with a circular cote de Genève. The solid 18K balance wheel was mesmerizing, perfectly balanced. The kind of movement you find in 1970s Omega watches, built in that very same village 60 years ago.

The small production run of only 50 TiD watches cost far more than we ever expected, and definitely more than we could afford, but the sacrifice was well worth it. We were proud to offer a NH watch which was as good as any Swiss watch, at a lower price. Yes, completely designed, assembled and adjusted in Australia. The original release price in 2018 was $3,500. Most of the watches were sold straight away, except for three, which were then priced at $4,000. Since then we’ve moved onto other projects, introducing new models: 45mm was simply too large for many of our customers.

The last three watches are firmly locked in time. Today, the production cost of 50 titanium cases would be tens of thousands of dollars. The mechanism of this finish – even more. Actually, the Swiss watch studio which helped us in production is no longer in business. For any small independent makers, life is always on the edge; being exceptionally good means very little in a turbulent world driven by relentless advertising and branding.

I am very proud of TiD Tito. I consider myself lucky that it bears my name on the dial. Completing a project of this magnitude in a very short period of time, on a limited budget was only possible thanks to your support; to Australian watch lovers who trusted us and supported our rebellion.

If you wish to invest in a watch which upholds all the core values of a true independent brand, then TiD is definitely the way to go. The price is $4,000. If you wish to add a hand made Australian watch box, then please add $275. Delivery is free of charge. Each watch comes with a five year guarantee and a life time of gratitude for your support.
